The B-Well Model - Dr. David Jones
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Tuesday May 31, 2022
Dr. David Jones joins the GraceStory Podcast to introduce the B-Well Model. Before his career change to a counselor educator, Dr. Jones worked as an epidemiologist for over a decade. Through these experiences he is able to build a bridge between professional counseling and public health, all through a Christian Worldview. Dr. Jones’ walks us through the integration of the B-Well Model into current secular mental health therapies and how the model goes well beyond the counselor office.
The six facets of the Biblical Wellness model (B-Well) are Heart, Mind, Strength, Soul, Neighbor, and Society.
- The heart is the seat of our emotions. We note the times we are sad, angry, joyful, peaceful, etc.
- The Mind is our thinking. It is how we perceive and make judgments of self, others, and the world. The thoughts can be helpful or hurtful.
- The Strength facet is our biological, physiological, and behaviors. Here you can look for how healthy you are, or do you experience a chronic illness or are healthy physically. Do you engage in avoidance (e.g., sleep to escape reality).
- Next is the soul, this is the place where the earthly and spiritual realms intersect. It is a reminder to evaluate your spiritual life (healthy or unhealthy aspects) as well as other spiritual influences outside of self.
- The neighbor facet asks you to examine your interpersonal relationships. How is your relationship with your spouse, kids, friends, church members, etc?
- Finally, Society is more distal influences. They may not be directly noted but may be indirect influences. These may be concerns such as discrimination based on sex, race, social-economic status, disease/ disorder (e.g., some people may experience stigma by society for their condition) or this can be societal influences that are positive such as acceptance of religion freedom, safe neighborhoods, healthy foods are available.
